In AI Mode, the tool loads a lightweight ML segmentation model directly inside your browser using WebGPU or browser engine. The model separates foreground subjects from the background without sending your photo to any server. In colour targeting modes (White, Black, Custom), pixel level colour matching removes the selected background colour. All processing is fully local.
The tool accepts any image format your browser can decode typically JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, and HEIC (on Safari). The output is always PNG, because PNG supports transparent alpha channels.
JPEG does not support transparency. A transparent background requires an alpha channel, which is only available in formats like PNG and WebP. Saving as JPG would fill the transparent areas with a solid colour (usually white), defeating the purpose.
Hair and soft edges are among the hardest challenges for any background removal tool. Select the 'Refine Hair' edge preset to improve results on portraits with fine strands. For images with very complex hair or high similarity colours between subject and background, results may still require manual touch up in a photo editor.
Yes. After processing, enable the Replace Background option. Choose Solid Color to fill with any colour, or upload a custom backdrop image. This is useful for product photography, online store listings, or social media content.
Click Sample lets you click directly on the background area of your image to sample that colour, then uses tolerance based colour matching to remove it. This works well for flat, single colour backgrounds that the AI mode may struggle with.
The tool handles images up to 20MB. Very large images may take longer to process during AI segmentation and may require more available browser memory.
Yes, AI Mode works on modern mobile browsers. Processing speed depends on device hardware. Older or lower powered devices may process more slowly. The non AI colour modes (White, Black, Custom) are very fast on all devices.
