This is a pixel interpolation process the browser calculates approximate values for the new pixels between existing ones. An optional sharpening filter then increases the contrast at edges to improve perceived detail. The optional Neural Network mode uses a lightweight model to attempt to restore edge detail more accurately.

No upscaler web based or otherwise can add detail that does not exist in the source image. What upscaling does is increase the number of pixels so the image can be displayed at larger sizes without visible pixelation. The sharpening filter and neural network mode improve the perceptual quality of the result but do not restore information that was never in the original.

Enabling the Neural Network option downloads a lightweight machine learning model (~5MB) to your browser. This model applies learned upscaling that can produce sharper and more detailed results than straight pixel interpolation, particularly for photographic content. The download happens once per browser session and does not leave your device.

Use 2x when you need a moderate size increase for example, preparing a small image for use at double resolution on a high DPI (Retina) screen. Use 4x when you have a small image that needs to appear at a much larger size, such as a low resolution product logo. Note that 4x creates a file with 16 times as many pixels as the original, producing a large output file.
